Description

Native to most of the eastern half of the United States, Ashy Sunflower can be found growing in the full sunlight of upland prairies and open grasslands. Growing 3-5 feet in height, it is topped with bright yellow flowers while in bloom from July-October when it is highly utilized by many pollinating species. This perennial spreads through seed and rhizomatous growth and can become aggressive, especially in disturbed areas. This species has many different uses and can be used in conservation plantings to increase diversity or planted in a garden to add attractive fall flowers. Highly palatable, this species is actively pursued by livestock and will decrease in abundancy in overgrazed pastures.
