Buckwheat is an annual broadleaf forb that is used to improve soil phosphorus availability, loosen surface soil, and attract beneficial insects. It can produce exceptional yields of nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators, producing a strong flavored dark honey. It has exceptional seedling vigor, allowing it to outcompete almost all annual weeds. Optimum planting dates are in early spring (April) or late summer (late July or early August) for blooming and seed production, but for cover crop purposes it can be planted anytime during the growing season. Optimum seeding rates range from 12 lbs per acre for general cover crop or pollinator attraction, up to 30 lbs per acre for weed suppression. It can be included in cover crop blends at 3 lbs per acre. Optimum planting depth is 1 inch.
