Winter Triticale

A cross between durum wheat and rye pollen, triticale offers a productive alternative to both of its parents.  Not as winterhardy as rye, but similar to wheat varieties in that factor.  Triticale offers the high forage or silage yield of rye, with added quality from the wheat component.  Many varieties are available, as breeding of triticale has improved recently.  Ideal planting for grain production is the same as winter wheat, while late August planting offers more fall growth with better disease resistance than wheat.  Planting winter triticale in the spring after vernalization can occur may offer a benefit of added forage production in late spring and summer.
