Description

A warm season bunchgrass that has a fibrous root system and grows from 1 ft. to 3 ft. tall. Blooms from May to September. Broad, short leaves.

ADAPTATION AND DISTRIBUTION: Deer-tongue grass is a native species that occurs in the Eastern half of the U.S. Deer-tongue grass grows best in damp sandy soil, although it is tolerant of drier environments, and can be found in marshy ground, thickets, gardens, wood margins, stream banks, roadsides, and shorelines.

HABITAT: Moist soils of woodland edges and clearings. pH 4.0 to 7.5. Partial shade tolerance.

ESTABLISHMENT: Broadcast or drill, seed in early spring or fall. Can be seeded in wildlife and wildflower seed mixes. Will produce complete cover in 2 years.
